This year Spinal Injuries Ireland were the grateful recipients of the Annual Fundraising Christmas Lunch held in the Intercontinental Hotel, Dublin.
Newstalk’s Ivan Yeats attended on the day and spoke with CEO Fiona Bolger alongside our keynote speaker and entrepreneur, Stephen Cluskey. Fiona discussed SII’s services and our service-users needs with Ivan. She explained the extent of the impact spinal cord injury can have and the supportive services we make available. Fiona noted the potential poverty trap due the fact that people with a spinal cord injury are not automatically entitled to a medical card. Something SII strongly advocates for.
Stephen spoke openly about his own accident and the injuries he sustained in 2002, as an 18 year old man whilst having fun on a camping trip with friends. He sustained a C2/3/4/5 spinal cord injury leaving his paralysed from the neck down. For Stephen, the paralysis was a massive challenge but the mental-side was always going to be tougher. He decided he needed to keep his mind busy and keep moving forward. Stephen completed his Leaving Cert, went on to study in college and continued on to thrive as an entrepreneur and business man. He believes there is always hope and the future is bright,
