A Day in My Wheels
A Day In My Wheels is an interactive and educational experience that goes beyond empathy and allows participants to briefly experience a different point of view. The training is aimed at giving companies a holistic understanding of the challenges around inclusivity, diversity and employability in the workplace. The format of the 2 hour session is typically as follows:
We open with a talk. This portion of the training covers inclusivity, diversity, safety, accessibility in the workplace for people with spinal cord injuries (SCI). We speak about, what a SCI is, what the national picture looks like, health and safety advice and warnings. We also cover what companies can do to improve their awareness and inclusivity and accessibility offering and what individuals can do in their everyday life.
Wheelchair Skills. This is an interactive and experiential session led by our SII Ambassadors. We will bring eight empty wheelchairs to your company (additional can be rented if needs be) for your staff and colleagues to take part in an interactive skills session. Our Ambassadors will set various challenges (weaving through cones, going up and down ramps, navigating footpaths etc) which will both challenge and educate your team in the many hidden challenges of accessibility. This is a fun and memorable way for your team to get a brief glimpse into the everyday life of living with a spinal cord injury.
Conversational Q&A. Our Ambassadors will sit down after the wheelchair skills with your team for a coffee to discuss the various hidden challenges of spinal cord injuries. This is a great, informal way for your team to ask questions of our Ambassadors to garner a deeper understanding of life with an SCI and disability in general.
We will come to your office in advance to plan the session with you to make sure we deliver a workshop for your team that they will both enjoy and remember for a long time to come.

Testimonials
“We have worked with Spinal Injuries Ireland to deliver two internal sessions, the first a general information session and the second ‘A Day in My Wheels’. Both sessions have been excellent and have helped educate our staff on the challenges people with spinal cord injuries face. The Day in My Wheels session is very interactive and gave people a real insight into the life of wheelchair users. I’d highly recommend them to any company looking to educate their staff in this area.”

The interactive wheelchair skills session was an eye-opener, allowing us to experience the physical challenges that wheelchair users encounter every day. This hands-on training has significantly increased our awareness and empathy, reinforcing our commitment to fostering a safer and more inclusive environment.
