Meet the Team

Name:ย Brian Lawlor

Age:ย 24

Injury:

C4-C5 Incomplete injury following a cycling accident inย 2012.ย  Brianย walks unaided.

Interests:

Brian volunteers with his local scout troop and enjoysย teachingย the scouts about nature and the outdoors.ย  He values theย importance ofย physical activity and fitness for mental as well as physicalย health.ย  Brianย works part time as our peer support coordinator and is veryย involved withย supporting the patients while they are in the NRH seeing theย value of peerย support from the very beginning.โ€‹

Why be a peer volunteer?

It started as something to do to just breakย upย the week but as I attended more and moreย sessions,ย I could see theย peopleย I spoke with really benefited from something as simple as a personย thatย listens.ย  I enjoy seeing people I help coming through at the endย strongerย than before, that for me embodies the strength and need forย peer support.


Name:ย Anna Carroll

Age:ย 38

Injury:

T6 complete injury following a road traffic accident in 2011, manualย wheelchair user.

Interests:

Anna enjoys going to the gym, swimming, art, shopping,ย travelling, cooking, baking,ย socialisingย and going to concerts.โ€‹

Why be a peer volunteer?

Anna became a peer mentor to help others toย see that life still can be lived. On a personal level she finds it reassuring toย talk to others with spinal cord injuries as they understand what each otherย is going through and talking about.โ€‹

 


Name:ย Bernard Healy

Age:ย 58

Injury:

C6 Incomplete injury following a rugby accident in 1980, powerย chair user

Interests:

Bernard has lived abroad for 5 years and speaks Thai so is veryย knowledgeable about travel and living in a foreign country.ย  He is anย enthusiastic poker player and is actively involved in his local rugby club.ย  Heย has embraced adult education, most recently completing a Masters inย History.

Why be a peer volunteer?

Bernard joined the Peer mentoring groupย because he was interested in informing people that, despite its difficultiesย and restrictions, there were opportunities for those with spinal injuries. Heย has also felt it rewarding personally when discussing hisย injury andย adaptations and difficulties coping with a spinal injury.

 


Name:ย Clodagh Cogley

Age:ย 26

Injury:

T10 complete injury following a fall abroad in 2015, manualย wheelchair user.ย  Clodagh completed her rehab abroad and in the NRH when she returnedย home to continue her studies.

Interests:

Clodagh has a lot of experience dealing with returning to collegeย and work post injury.ย ย She hasย travelled extensively and livedย abroad.ย  Clodagh is currently working in the area of health psychology whichย makes her ideally suited to be a peerย volunteer.ย  Sheย lovesย swimming,ย socialisingย and cooking.

Why be a peer volunteer?

โ€œI decided to become a peer mentor because Iย know first-hand how much of a difference it can make in the early stagesย following SCI. Being able to pass on some of the informationย Iโ€™veย learnedย over the years is really rewarding, andย Iโ€™mย glad for the opportunity to giveย back to the SCI community who were so kind to me when I first had myย injuryโ€


Name:ย Conor McGinn

Age:ย 65

Injury:

10 Complete injury in 1981 following a motorcycle racing accident inย the Isle of Man TT races and is a manual wheelchair user.

Interests:

Conorย is now retired and has huge experience dealing with theย pros and cons of the office environment asย aย ย wheelchairย user,ย โ€‹colleaguesโ€™ย expectations and the considerations that may need to beย made.ย  He has travelled extensively, both by air and hire car to the USA &ย Europe, and by driving throughout Ireland, UK & France to self-accommodating holiday homes.

Why be a peer volunteer?

He enjoys peer mentoring, encouraging othersย hopes and ideas to be confident to try new things. โ€œRealisingย how easy it is toย achieve things again after spinal injury, will change your outlook in life,ย again.โ€


Name:ย Declan Jordan

Age:ย 57

Injury:

T3 -T4 Complete injury in 2001 following a motorbike accident inย America, manual wheelchair user.

Interests:

Declan has a lot of outdoor interests; he is a member of the Celticย motorbike club in New York and has a trike which enables him to get out onย the road again.ย  He felt he really benefitted from rehab activities such asย canoeing, sailing, sky diving and skiing while in the States.ย ย He divides hisย time between Ireland and Newย York and isย involved with peerย mentoringย Stateside also.

Age:ย 37

Injury:

ย T5 Complete injury from aย horse-ridingย accident, manual wheelchairย user

Interests:

Emma works in UCD and is doing a PHD in veterinary medicine,ย she is a bigย sc-fi fan (especially Star Trek), likes travelling, has two cats andย two ponies; Emma competes at horse driving trials.ย  She is available to chatย with anyone who needs advice especially in the areas of education and work.

Name:ย Gemma Willis

Age:ย 25

Injury:

L4 complete injury in 2015 following a car accident, manualย wheelchair user.ย 

Interests:

Gemmaโ€™sย many interests include swimming, the gym, reading,ย cooking and baking (Gemma was a chef before her injury), being in theย outdoors and going to concerts and rugby matches.

Why be a peer volunteer?

ย โ€œDealing with a spinal cord injury isnโ€™t easy; itย puts your mind and body through a test. Trying to figure things out forย yourself isnโ€™t impossible, but why do it alone? Thatโ€™s exactly what I did in theย beginning. Once I began to talk to my peers, I realized that I could live aย productive life with a spinal cord injury. I decided that I wanted to make aย difference for the next person. I wanted to be there for those who needed toย talk about the difficulties of living with a spinal cord injury. I also wanted toย assist by providing resources. I love helping people overcome the obstaclesย theyโ€™ve encountered while dealing with an injury.โ€


Name:ย John O’Farrell

Age:ย 60, married with 2 sons

Injury:

C3-T6 Incomplete injury following a road traffic accident in 2005, manual and powerchair user.ย 

Interests:

John is interested in most sports;ย he finds exercise very helpful in managing his pain.ย  He isย alsoย interestedย in gardening and cooking.ย 

Why be a peer volunteer?

John has worked in the area of mental health as a psychiatric nurse for over 25 years.ย  In the early days of his injury John says he made many mistakes so he wants to share his knowledge and hopefully support people to look for solutions.ย 


Name:ย Julie Barnett

Age:ย 44, married with 1 son and 2 daughters

Injury:

Cauda Equina Syndromeย (CES)ย caused by a ruptured disc in 2013.ย  Incomplete L4-S1 injuryย 

Interests:

Julie is a chef by trade and makes novelty birthday cakes.ย  She is also involved in an art group in her local area.ย 

Why be a peer volunteer?

Julie wants to support others to come to terms with being diagnosed with CES and to show people there is light at the end of the tunnel. โ€œItโ€™s a long road but itโ€™s not the end of the worldโ€ย 


Name:ย Karen Farrar

Age:ย 58

Injury:

T5 complete injury in 2004 following a fall while on holidays.ย  Powerย and manual chair user

Interests:

Worked as a nurse, took early retirement in 2015.ย  Karen now runsย a business from her own home.ย ย Happy to chat about all aspects of being aย paraplegic.

Why be a peer volunteer?

โ€œI decided to become a peer volunteer as Iโ€™dย received so much as anย in-patientย I thought itโ€™d be nice to help in some smallย wayโ€ฆ. I really love it and Iโ€™ve learnt new information too. It really is a greatย pooling of information for everyone involved! I love it!โ€


Name:ย Noreen Ledwidge

Age:ย 70

Injury:

Transverse Myelitis 2006 T9-T11 incomplete, walks with the use of anย aid while out and about

 

Interests:

Worked as a Nurse/ midwife.ย  Loves travel, meditation, theatre,ย concerts, aqua aerobics, cinema, reading.โ€‹

Why be a peer volunteer?

When I came home from NRH in 2006 thereย wasnโ€™tย anyone else with Transverse Myelitis to talk to and I felt very alone. Itย takes time to adjust to normal life again andย I wouldย have loved to talk toย someone with same condition.ย I wouldย like to be there for anyone in similarย circumstances.ย ย Comfortable talking about any issues with someone withย Transverse Myelitis.

 


Name:ย Ollie Hickey

Age:ย 53

Injury:

T4 Complete injury from a construction site accident in 2002.ย  Manualย wheelchair user

Interests:

Ollie enjoys sport, especially GAA and soccer.ย  He enjoys currentย affairs, music and going to concerts and shows.ย  He has been very involved inย looking at transport issues through his work on the IWA transportย committee, including air travel, public transport and wheelchair parking.

Why be a peer volunteer?

Ollie has been delighted to be involved in peerย support because he feels he has a lot of experience in the life changingย effects of acquiring a spinal injury.ย  He is very interested in making peopleโ€™sย lives a little easier and giving someone the sense that everything isย achievable.ย 

 


Name:ย Paul Fitzhenry

Age:ย 55, 2 sons

Injury:

Guillain Barrรฉ diagnosed in 2016ย 

Interests:

Paul lovesย learning new things and meeting new people.ย  He enjoys sketching, especially buildings in his local area.ย 

Why be a peer volunteer?

Paul wants to help support people who find themselves in a similar situation that he was inย at the beginning of hisย diagnosis.ย 

 


Name:ย Sandra Loftus

Age:ย 57, 1 son and 1 daughter

Injury:

Guillain Barrรฉ diagnosed in 2003, caused from complications from food poisoning.ย 

Interests:

ย Sandra is very creative land loves interior design, gardening, cooking, fashion and entertaining.

Why be a peer volunteer?

Having spent over a year in hospital initially Sandra can relate to the anxiety and loneliness experienced by others in a similar situation.ย  She would like to help anyone who finds themselves in this position and share her experiences while listening to their fears and questions.
